After serving in pastoral ministry in the United States for fifteen years, my wife and I experienced a fresh work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Not only were we revived in our personal walk with Jesus, but God expanded our vision for His kingdom. Soon we sensed His call to go into all the world and preach the gospel. Enthusiasm gripped us as God opened door after door for our missionary‑evangelistic ministry. After taking us to six continents, God has focused much of our overseas ministry in Africa.
The African people are especially inquisitive. Hours of lively discussion with our African friends filled our waking hours. In fact, many of their questions on the Second Coming have been included in this book. Because our inquirers had been affected by the “secret rapture” teaching, their questions, as well as others we’ve added, provide a good basis to answer the big question: Will the Church go through the Great Tribulation?
This book, which began as a personal research project, soon snowballed in size and scope. At first, it started as a study entitled, “Fourteen Reasons Why We Believe the Church Will Go Through the Tribulation.” We soon realized, however, that it was insufficient because of the teaching that certain portions of Scripture concerning the end‑time and the Second Coming pertain to Israel, not to the Church. Consequently, we’ve included two chapters that address this very topic. With the help of the Lord, we also tackled the question, “Will all Israel be saved?”
Our research in the Scriptures also enabled us to find answers to related questions such as, “Who are the two witnesses?” and “Who are the 144,000?” Many people asked how a millennium after the return of Christ would be possible in light of the gospels and epistles. As a result, we added chapters twenty to twenty‑three, “Heaven,” “The Final Battle,” and “A Literal Millennium?”
Some chapters are divided into two categories: Questions Answered and Objections Answered. We include many extra scripture references so the serious Bible student may pursue the various issues in depth. The questions and answers can be used easily for both personal research and Bible classes. We trust this book will spur you on to be like the Bereans who “searched the Scriptures daily, to see whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11).
The following pages will challenge your end‑time theology. The message of this book cuts against the grain of some popular teaching on the Second Coming. It may even offend your long held personal beliefs on certain doctrines. But none of those reasons should deter the serious Bible student from examining what he believes about the Second Coming. Jesus promised that “the Spirit of truth . . . will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13). May you rely on the Holy Spirit for insight as you diligently search God’s Word.
